John Paul Thurlow – “Cover 74 Alternative Version”

Date: August 16th 2009 John Paul Thurlow blogs about the process of designing the alternative cover of Sketchbook MagazineAt last it’s done. Thank you Wafa (editor in chief of Sketchbook magazine) for being incredibly patient with me and for being so precise in your brief + collaborative feedback. I love the results. I hope Susie does too.

This Cover is based on a picture of Susie Bubble I found on about page 12 of Google image results. It was in-synch with Wafa’s brief; ‘draw your fave fashion blogger and show-off the fashion-forward clothes she loves to wear…’I like the way Susie’s hair is worn under her scarf, thereby creating a visual wink to Anna Wintour’s bob. I’m not sure this was intentional in the original photo but it’s something I tried to bring out.I held back on the scribbles (just used here to create some extra frizz) and really went for a beauty shot with the face. Overall this one reminds me of the Grace Jones/Jean Paul Goude V cover I redrew recently, lots of detail and blacked-in areas. When the magazine is out (go buy a copy!) I’ll upload some more pics…
