Two islanders, who also happen to be sisters, share the love for laughter, giggles, fashion, the tropical beaches and endless hours music! One has a day job while the other is a recent fashion design graduate and both soon to be entrepreneurs. Blogger sisters with different styles, viewpoints and personalities officially launched their blog in September of 2011. Sketchbook Magazine sat down with the A Day in The Sandbox sisters to learn more about their extremely genuine and personal blog!
How long have you two had an interest in fashion?
We have been interested in fashion since the very beginning; we would always love to create outfits for each other ever since we were kids. Our mom influenced us a lot and embedded it in us. We only realized it as we grew older.
How did the idea of the blog come about?
One of us had a lot of time after work and was thinking of a way to fill the gap and nurture the love for fashion while the other wanted to cement her studies for fashion design and interpret it in a way that is visible to others, the idea of keeping a diary of our personal thoughts, style as well as documenting the sisterly bonding we have has been in our heads for about two years and mustered up the courage to finally start about a year and a half ago with the support of our family and friends.
Living in a conservative Arab country, did you have any reservations prior to starting the blog? If so, what were they?
We thought about it during our brainstorming process, we talked to our family and consulted them. Their support was the best kind of kick to start a passion we longed for and we also think that the Middle East is slowly coming out of its shell and becoming more accepting to such ideas.
Where did the name A Day In The Sandbox come from?
The inspiration came after hearing our cousins, they nicknamed Bahrain as the Sandbox, Bahrain is a desert basically! When we revamped the site we included our little own definition as to where the name came from.
What content does your blog mostly focus on?
We try to keep it as personal as possible, its all about us and our interest infused with some DIY, our outings, friends, inspiration, style posts and a whole lot of fashion! That’s the biggest part of the blog! You can sense the personal touch in every post and that means a lot to us and we got positive feedback from our readers!
What would you say is your audience’s favorite part of your blog?
We got a lot of praises on our interest in flaunting our readers, we have a segment called ‘a day in my shoes’ where readers from across the Middle East sends us their favorite outfit pictures and we post them on the blog along with a mini interview, we have more ideas coming up to keep interacting with out followers to stay tuned!
Most blogs these days will focus on one subject matter and go with it. A kind of specialization, if you will. Why did you guys decide to go in such an eclectic direction?
Well the part that we have two authors for the blog with two different personalities and own individual style is what makes us talk about different topics, we are lovers of life and think that we should boast it and share it with readers and that specializing our blog and keeping it to one topic is not fair to the other things we love to do! Our blog is like a roadmap; it maps out both our passions and allows us to interpret it in our own way.
How has your life changed since launching the blog?
It is more fun we have to say, it opened a lot of doors and gave us the chance to meet a lot of new and interesting individuals, entrepreneurs, other inspiring bloggers and personalities who share the same interest as ours. Social media is such a vast world with a lot of opportunities! Who knew?!
What would you say is your most memorable moment as bloggers?
It is very hard to sum everything memorable in one moment, we feel truly blessed to have come this far in blogging and to us the best moments are when we attend events and get to meet all the friends we have built during the year whether it were here in Bahrain or even around the GCC! Receiving floods of emails from across the globe is also great feeling that we cannot neglect and the ability to work with entrepreneurs from our little sandbox is always a pride and joy!
Describe your blog in three words.
Eclectic, simple, personal.
