Wake them up, Inspire them – Meet Muris Halilović

The greatest minds come from the most unexpected places. This is true in the case of young video and digital artists Muris Halilović who hails from the small town of Srebrenik  in the southeastern European country of Bosnia and Herzegovin.  This creative personality recognised that there was a significant lack of creative stimulation for the youth in his country. “I want to wake them up, inspire them to make and write their own ideas, sketch them.” And thus the Smart Ass Notebook was born. This young creative offered his stifled peers an outlet to get their innovational juices flowing! Muris told Sketchbook more about himself, the products he’s created and their designs.

How long have you worked, or had an interest in design? And what areas of design to you mostly work in?

I am not strictly a designer, more a creative person and illustrator, but for at least 10 years into digital works. Mainly I have been working with the musicians. making vinyl, cd, digital covers, party posters, making logos for the labels, making animation and recording musical videos.

How has the feedback on your products been like so far?

This project started almost 3 months ago, I have contacted like 15 friends of mine, sharing just few images of my “product” just to get some reply, and almost everyone ordered “the pack”. So, I stared making them, design it, printing at friends print shop, cutting paper and sewing it. And I haven’t invested a penny into the marketing, people shared “the product” between the friends. I got great feedback, few folks suggested me some changes, I have accepted them and the new version of them are coming out soon.

Where did the names of the sketchbook/notebooks come from?

Well, the names (Creative Ass Sketchbook, Smart Ass Notebook, Stupid Ass or the new one The Brave Ass) came from my desperate condition, while being lazy for a few months, expecting miracle to show up… reading self-help books, motivating myself… I realized I have to kick my self into ass to start my creative work, so it was simple to start, just kicked it. I have my weird sense for humor, so I used it to crossover with creativity.

Do you plan to expand your products into other stationary or gift items?

I’m planning to make also more custom notebooks for NGOs, various companies, festivals.
